Asthma is a disease that affects 300 million people worldwide, and is the cause of an estimated 3,500 people in the U.S. every year ( American Asthma Foundation ).
There is currently no cure for asthma, but there are ways to reduce the chronic attacks that cause over over $50 billion a year in medical costs, missed school days, missed work days, etc.
Numerous studies have been done on whether Chiropractic can help Asthma and they all show a strong correlation that “The people that suffer from Asthma who have been regularly treated with Chiropractic had fewer asthma attacks”.
In a study done in 20011 involving 36 patients aged 6 – 17:
At the end of the 12-week intervention phase, objective lung function tests and patient-rated day and nighttime symptoms based on diary recordings showed little or no change. Of the patient-rated measures, a reduction of approximately 20% in beta(2) bronchodilator use was seen (P =.10). The quality of life scores improved by 10% to 28% (P <.01), with the activity scale showing the most change. Asthma severity ratings showed a reduction of 39% (P <.001), and there was an overall improvement rating corresponding to 50% to 75%.
Does this mean that the chiropractic adjustments are curing asthma? The answer to that is no, we don’t believe it is, however chiropractic is allowing the individuals immune system to work better, which in turn keeping asthma under better control.
